INTRODUCING THE NEW SDSA APP!

Written by Michael Benjamin and Allen Roberts

After months of beta testing, we’re excited to announce the new members-only app, available on both iPhone and Android platforms. (Non-member rally crew may access the app for a limited time before, during and after each rally.  SDSA membership is required for continued access.) The app combines many SDSA membership benefits in one easy-to-access program that includes the following:
  • Messaging your fellow Dawgs (similar to WhatsApp),
  • Posting information and photos (similar to Facebook),
  • Membership directory,
  • Member and rally tracking maps and
  • Library of Zoom education recordings,

To get started, search Salty Dawg from the iPhone App or Android Play Store, download, and launch the app from your device.

Log into the member section using the same email address or username as your existing SDSA website login. While the email/username is the same as your SDSA login, a new password is required for the app. A code will be sent to your email to confirm your account (check your spam folder if you don’t receive the email within a few minutes.)  The new password can be the same as you currently use for the SDSA website (following the app’s minimum password requirements), but it will not modify your password for the website. Note: In many cases, SDSA members have used a single membership profile and email address for two spouses/partners. To allow both partners full advantage of this App (e.g., messaging), a unique profile and email for each family member is required on the SDSA website (no additional fee). Click this link for instructions on how to do that:  https://sdsa.memberclicks.net/how-to-edit-family-contacts

Once you have successfully logged into the app, you will see the home screen with Posts and Messages at the top. Under Messages, there are three tabs:

  1. Chats that contain existing message threads;
  2. Users, where you can search and message fellow members; and
  3. Groups, both private and public.

Create your own private group and invite others (only people you invite can see your group). Join existing public groups that have been created by an SDSA administrator and are identified with a globe icon. These include Rallies (group name begins with Rally), Destinations (begins with Dawgs), Social (begins with Salty), and Technical (begins with Tech). If you’re registered for a rally, you’re also automatically a member of a Bulletin group that distributes news and announcements for that specific rally (user messages are not permitted there).

Next, try out Posts, which is the best place for keeping a thread of communication in a single place. Write a new post, add a photo, and click Post to share with all Dawgs. To post to a specific group, use the drop-down menu or search using the filter icon (looks like a funnel). Comment on existing posts by scrolling through your list of posts and posting a comment. Note: Groups for Messages and Posts are the same so if you’re subscribed to a group in Messages, all posts for that group will appear in your list of Posts.

Back to the home page, click Member Map and find your location using the circled arrow. Find a nearby Dawg boat and click on it and information about the boat and the member will appear on the next screen. From here, you can directly message that boat making it the perfect way to invite neighboring members over for sundowners!

Explore the other App features from the home screen or by clicking the three bars in the top left corner to display a menu. Tell us about your experiences, both good and bad. A good place for feedback is the group “Tech - App” or use the “Feedback” on the app.   We are continually improving the app with subsequent releases, so keep a sharp lookout for updates. We will also host a Zoom session to further explain how to use the App in real time, do a live walk-through and respond to comments and questions.  That session is currently scheduled for September 12, 2024, at 5pm eastern time.  Click here for details.

We hope the new App creates a more meaningful SDSA community experience and allows you to take full advantage of all your year-round Salty Dawg member benefits.
