Register Now for the 2025 Caribbean Rally!

Plans are well underway for the Salty Dawg Sailing Association 2025 Caribbean Rally.  This year will mark our 15th consecutive year of sailing in company to the Caribbean. 

SDSA president Mike Benjamin announced, “Vessels can choose to depart from either (i) Hampton, Virginia, with an anticipated departure date of November 1, 2025 (weather permitting), bound for either Marsh Harbor, Great Abaco, Bahamas or Antigua or (ii) Newport Rhode Island, bound for Antigua, with an anticipated departure date in late October.  Vessels destined for Antigua will also have the option to stop briefly in Bermuda.”

The passage to Antigua should take about 12 days while the passage to the Bahamas should take about 5 days.

o   Pre-departure education and support from the SDSA team, outside experts and sponsors.  Learn how to prepare for and what to expect on your passage to the Caribbean.

o   Emergency “concierge” style 24/7 medical support by George Washington Maritime Medical Services.

o   Pre departure and daily on route weather forecasting and routing by Chris Parker at Marine Weather Center.

o   Position tracking map.

o   Pre departure and arrival social events and camaraderie.

This rally is an opportunity for sailors to cruise-in-company, with the safety, camaraderie, and passage-preparation assistance that the SDSA provides. Meet new friends and reunite with old ones. Kids and pets are welcome. Every SDSA rally unites experienced ocean sailors with developing cruisers to broaden their blue water horizons. Independent thinkers also value the Salty Dawg’s focus on the importance of each skipper’s role to make the right decisions for his or her boat and crew. 

Plans are well underway for the Salty Dawg Sailing Association Rally to the Azores in 2025.  

The Salty Dawg Sailing Association (SDSA) will be running its first ever rally across the north Atlantic to Horta in the Azores Islands in the spring of 2025.  

SDSA president Mike Benjamin announced, “The rally will have starts in St. Maarten in the Caribbean and in Hampton, Virginia, on May 18th, with an initial destination of Bermuda. The fleet will gather in Bermuda for final preparations and festivities and will then depart for the Azores on June 1. The passage across the Atlantic should take in the neighborhood of two weeks depending on boat speed and weather.  For many of us, this passage across the Atlantic to the Azores and then on to Europe has been on our bucket lists for a long time.”

The Salty Dawgs will conduct a number of webinars for skippers and those contemplating the run, with the next session scheduled for January 9th at 17:00 eastern time, with a focus on the Azores as a cruising destination.  To register for this free event, go to (https://sdsa.memberclicks.net/freewebinarazoresrally).

KEY RALLY DATES

• Starts from Hampton and St. Maarten for Bermuda:  May 18, 2025

• Start from Bermuda for Horta: June 1, 2025

• Arrive Horta:  Mid June. 

• Educational webinars for participants to be scheduled will include topics such as weather routing, cruising the Azores, provisioning, spare parts, in addition to overviews of destinations such as Europe and the Mediterranean.  

(Note: The St. Maarten start will coincide with the start of the SDSA’s annual Homeward Bound Rally to Hampton VA, which will include an optional stop in Bermuda.)

The initial Azores Rally in 2025 will be limited to the first 25 boats that pay the rally fee and pass a general vetting by the SDSA rally management team. The rally fee has been set at $550 per boat. There is no separate crew fee. It is expected that all skippers will have the necessary verifiable blue water sailing experience as specified in the rally description.

I am passing along a statement from the family of Kathy and Ralph, released today, as they attempt to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy. 

If anything good has come out of this it is the outpouring of support and love for our fellow cruisers who died so senselessly.  

On a more practical note, the program to raise funds to help the family deal with a badly damaged boat, travel, legal, funeral and so many other expenses that grow out of a tragedy of this magnitude is going well and if you are inspired to contribute, follow this link.

Statement from the family of Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel

We are incredibly saddened to hear the news that our parents Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry are now presumed dead. We remain optimistic in the on-going search led by the St. Vincent Coast Guard.

We are coordinating with the United States Embassy, the governments of St. Vincent and Grenada, as well as other officials of the United States government, as they continue their work on this on-going investigation into the alleged crimes committed by these three suspects currently held in custody by Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.

We would like to say a few words about Kathy and Ralph that we wish all to know. We live in world that at times can be cruel, but it’s also a world of profound beauty, wonder, adventure, love, compassion, caring, and faith. Our parents encompassed all those values and so much more. If we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born. Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of, sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family – that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts.

We are grateful to have been raised by the strongest people that we will ever know, and we hope that we can follow in their footsteps and strive to be even half as wonderful as them. So many people have reached out with love and encouragement, sharing stories and anecdotes of their memories of Ralph and Kathy, and those stories are what we want them to be remembered by. While the end of their life may have been dark, they brought light, and that light will never be extinguished from the hearts and minds of the people who knew, loved and cared so deeply about them.

We are ever hopeful that justice will be served.

In honor of Ralph and Kathy, we ask that everyone please take a moment to stop, pray and reflect on how lucky we were to have known them – hug your loved ones, spend time with your families, and console one another as we all collectively mourn.

Bryan Hendry: Statement from the family

We want to reach out to the entire cruiser community to express our gratitude for everyone that worked to gather information from eyewitnesses and provide search and rescue support. It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible.

Thanks to all this input from this community we are able to develop a timeline of events. For the safety of the cruising community we are asking all cruisers, and anyone that is not affiliated with the officials with presiding jurisdiction, to stand down. The only way we feel this situation could be worse would be if anyone was hurt or endangered trying to conduct searches.

We also want to applaud the St. Vincent authorities for their quick actions in securing Simplicity and their brave, swift response that led to the apprehension of three dangerous fugitives. We greatly appreciate the coordination of the St. Vincent and Royal Grenadian Police forces and Coast Guards in investigating these events.
