SETTING SAIL IN THE MED:  UNDERSTANDING YOUR LICENSING OPTIONS

by Captain Mark and Sharon Noneman, Calypso Sailing Life, a NauticEd Sailing School

The Mediterranean, with its azure waters, historic ports, and charming coastal towns, is a sailor's paradise. But before you charter a yacht or set off in your own boat on your dream voyage, it's essential to ensure you have the proper sailing license. Unlike sailing in North America, many countries in the Med including Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Croatia, and others require a license that verifies sailing competence.

Two prominent options for international sailing certification are the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) and the NauticEd Sailing License and Credentials (SLC™). Let's explore these credentials to help you determine which is the right fit for your Mediterranean adventure.

The International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

The ICC is a widely recognized sailing license that conforms to Resolution 40 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Many Mediterranean countries, including Italy, Greece, Croatia, Spain, and France, either require or strongly recommend the ICC.

Obtaining the ICC:

The process of obtaining an ICC can vary depending on your nationality. If you're a citizen of a country that has adopted Resolution 40, you'll typically need to demonstrate your competence through an existing national sailing license or by passing an examination administered by an approved sailing organization.

For US and Canadian citizens, the path to obtaining an ICC can be a bit more complex, as the US and Canada have not adopted Resolution 40. Generally, North American sailors can obtain an ICC through the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). While based in the UK, the RYA has a global network of schools and offers courses leading to certifications that are eligible for ICC application.

In general, the ICC requires passing a comprehensive written test and an on-the-water assessment of a wide variety of sailing skills. Note that the theory and testing portion of the RYA Day Skipper certification (required to receive the ICC) can be completed via NauticEd online. Your on-the-water assessment must be completed with an RYA-certified instructor.

The NauticEd Sailing License and Credentials (SLC)

The NauticEd SLC is a relatively new but increasingly popular alternative to the ICC. It's a globally recognized sailing license that meets the standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). NauticEd is also recognized by the US Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).

Obtaining the SLC:

To obtain the SLC, you'll need to complete the following steps:

  1. Online Coursework: Complete NauticEd's Bareboat Charter Master course bundle, which includes approximately 40 hours of online instruction.
  2. Assessment: Undergo an on-water practical assessment with a certified NauticEd instructor to demonstrate your sailing skills. Calypso Sailing Life offers the Bareboat Charter Master and SLC on-the-water assessments on your boat or on our Leopard 48 sailing catamaran.

Comparing the ICC and NauticEd SLC

The ICC and NauticEd SLC are both recognized by most countries in the Mediterranean. However, there are some key differences between the two licenses that sailors should be aware of before choosing which one to obtain.

  • Cost: The ICC is typically more expensive than the NauticEd SLC.
  • Time commitment: The ICC requires more time to obtain than the NauticEd SLC.
  • Recognition: The ICC is recognized by more countries than the NauticEd SLC.
  • Flexibility: The NauticEd SLC offers more flexibility than the ICC. Sailors can complete the online sailing courses at their own pace and take the practical sailing test at a convenient time and location.

Choosing the Right License for You

Both the ICC and the NauticEd SLC are valid options for sailing in the Mediterranean. The best choice for you will depend on your individual circumstances and preferences.

  • Consider the ICC if: You prefer a more traditional certification route or if you already hold a national sailing license that qualifies you for the ICC.
  • Consider the NauticEd SLC if: You value convenience, accessibility, and a comprehensive online learning experience.

Beyond the License

While obtaining the necessary sailing license is crucial, remember that responsible sailing involves more than just certification. Before embarking on your Mediterranean journey, be sure to:

  • Prioritize safety: Ensure your vessel is properly equipped and that you have a solid understanding of safety procedures.
  • Gain practical experience: Spend time sailing in varied conditions to build your confidence and skills.
  • Familiarize yourself with local regulations: Navigation rules, maritime laws, and customs & immigration regulations can vary between countries.
  • Plan your itinerary carefully: Consider weather patterns, potential hazards, and available resources when charting your course.

By obtaining the appropriate sailing license and prioritizing responsible practices, you can set sail in the Mediterranean with confidence and enjoy a safe and unforgettable sailing adventure.
